Depending on the kind of story you want to tell was the starting point for my characters and then a lot of details are just flipped:
>main conflict is that people have been given an ultimatum
>a character who would have the most trouble with this is one who doesn't like to be influenced
>who tend to not like to be influenced? Let's say he has a poor blue collar background
>but the foil has no trouble with making this choice, let's say she is middle class
>how do I get these characters to run into each other? Let's have them get married and a parallel conflict
And then I add some similarities and other differences, I investigate the reasons why these characters are motivated the way they are, add more supporting characters that address other aspects of the story.

It immediately reminded me of the Book of Job, where Job's life is destroyed by Satan. Satan made a bet with God that Job would curse God if his life was ruined. Job's friends could not comprehend that Job's suffering was due to anything other than Job's own sins. In the end, Job is restored for his faith, and his friends and Satan are rebuked. Did you have that in mind as a retelling of it, or does it go in a different direction?

>but novels died in the 1950s
Wait then what are we trying to write, novellas? Serialized garbage? A short story collection? A screenplay?

>44 chapters
You're justified in working on it the way you do. Writing large stories is challenging to pull off no matter what, and it's especially painful to do a rewrite if you don't fix things early. My story is only 16 chapters by comparison.

Absolutely this.

I couldn't believe it when a friend told me about it, and then I got legitimately angry when I finally saw it.

What does that fuck think he's doing? None of his fans will get the reference, so he's just measuring his dick in the most egregious way possible. I'm still kind of angry about t

Say wht you will about Post-Modernism, but it's infinitely preferable to New Sincerity. Especially the way that New Sincerity has evolved in Western Society.

I need something to read, /lit/. My life's been in the shitter for the last few years, and I can't seem to get out of it. I'm 21 and I'm going nowhere fast. My parents are probably going to split up, and the one girl who I've liked since middle school is dating one of my good friends. I've been considering suicide, but I don't want to bail on my brother, who's younger than me and is most likely going to need me around.

I want to take my mind off of things, but I've run out of things to read. Bukowski's 'Post Office' is the last thing on my list and then that's it. I'm looking for something dark, maybe some (very) dark comedy, just nothing existential or excessively nihilistic.
