China is a third-world dictatorship which miraculously became somewhat prosperous over the last couple of decades because the West was willing to do trade with it. This situation has totally gone to their heads and recently they've started to act (just like so many times in the last century) completely irrational.

Read the Orville book and you'll understand that China has a massive chip on their shoulder ("muh, the evil West conquered OUR China") and that they are used to failing big time. It means that even if they completely fuck up and flush down all the achievements of the last 30-40 years their brainddead population will quietly accept it because, again, they are culturally accustomed to spectacular failures (great leap forward, cultural revolution etc).
