I read the book. Its awfully written even though the premise is cool. If you've actually read books after high school because you enjoy them you'll find The Martian written in an extremely robotic way that completely lacks literary beauty.

The prose is just mechanical in its simplicity, the jokes are pretty tryhard, there's a lot of unnecessary characters and drama that feels like its been manufactured in a Chinese sweat shop.

There's this brief romance set up amongst two team members for example and its *completely* pointless and devoid of any emotion.

Its like the book was written to become a Hollywood movie from the get go.

The sad bit is, the concept is cool and the execution could have been stellar. However the book is just not a good read at all. Kudos to the author for making it free on his site at one point though and for seeming like a genuine person regarding the science-y stuff in his book (even though I don't think he did a good job writing it)
