Who are some good female authors that have written things with genuine artistic/literary merit?
I would like to read more books by women, but I've found that a lot of popular literature written by women tends to be narcissistic and shallow, always being about a vain preoccupation with one's own body or one's relationships with men or whatever. I want to avoid things like this and instead find books by women that attempt to address more lofty subject matter. I imagine this stuff is easiest to find in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, but any time period would be good. Can anyone give me some names?
