Can someone explain this book to me?

So, I just finished reading The Trial.
Kafka's reputation, as well as the way the book went, pretty much guaranteed to me that the story would end badly and unceremoniously. But I wasn't prepared for this.
Somehow, the way the end was written and the way shit got real moved me in a way that the rest of the book hasn't. I was suddenly thrown from merely understanding how shitty the situation was to actualy feeling for Josef K. and his predicament.
Did anyone else get that?
