Part detective story in a similar misanthropic vein to Chinatown, it's also about Malibu in the mid-70s and the great counter-culture washout. It was made into a pretty good movie starring Jeff Bridges as the original Lebowski. Basically a forgotten classic.

Cutter and Bone - Malibu in the 70s, crippled and crazed Vietnam vet Cutter, his alcoholic shut-in girlfriend and infant daughter. Their mutual friend Bone, the deeply apathetic gigolo drop-out who lives on their couch. The latter witnesses a body being dumped into a bin one night and doesn't want to know about it, but accidentally allows Cutter to become obsessed by it and the person responsible. Awesome book.
