>"Tell me more about your cousins," Rorschach sent.
>"Our cousins lie about the family tree," Sascha replied, "with nieces and nephews and Neanderthals. We do not like annoying cousins."
>"We'd like to know about this tree."
Sascha muted the channel and gave us a look that said Could it be any more obvious? "It couldn't have parsed that. There were three linguistic ambiguities in there. It just ignored them."
>"Well, it asked for clarification," Bates pointed out.
>"It asked a follow-up question. Different thing entirely."

What is the third linguistic ambiguity? "Lies" and "annoying" are obvious, but what is the third one?

It's actually a masterpiece and pretty clearly a work of genius. Peter watts also ripped of ted chiang hard

Help me out here /lit/. I tried reading this and I eventually set it down because I wasn't enjoying it. I'm a fan of cosmic horror and all that but I reached a point where I had gotten tired of how dreary and miserable the characters, tone, prose, and setting are. I can take grim books but I don't like it when it doesn't feel like there's a point to any of the gloom. Am I missing something?

What are more "first contact" type of stories that are unsettling. I thought pic related and the Three Body problem books had some ideas in them that really were terrifying in some ways

Doesn't feel like it. Most futuristic sci-fi has cyberpunk kinda shit in it.

I just read this and even it had stuff that blends into the genre.

This was great. It's nice to read some sci-fi with understanding of detailed biology for once and not just vague broad terminology.

Any other books like this that blend actual science with good story telling?
