I want to read a good book which plays in medieval Europe. I read Narcissus and Goldmund years ago and enjoyed it quite much.

So I wonder, are there any other good books, especially interested if it plays in the time of the Black Death.

Who has read Narcissus and Goldmund?

Who is determined to walk the path that Goldmund tread?

Who wants to stay in the proverbial cloister reading, praying, living in the world of the mind like Narcissus?

Who thinks there was way too much alluded to sex in this book?

Was anyone else as disappointed with this book as I was? I've heard time and time again that it's his finest novel apart from Steppenwolf, and I can't quite agree. All of the characterization seemed sketchy (like a sketch, not like a drug addict in an alley) at best; and although the ending was admirable, it really just left me cold. Thoughts?
