Any majors out there that are good for people who love reading but hate mechanics?

Hey /lit/ need some quick advice, about you start my nightly reading and I'm deciding on whether to read "Murders in the Rue Morgue" by Poe or Finish "American Psycho" by Bret Easton Ellis.
Admire the awesome 1st edition cover.

Also, what the hell is up near the end when some shit hits the fan and it goes to 3rd person for a while?

Is the point of the book to make you insane?

After reading AP, what my final thoughts on the book were that it was a very well written book about vulgar and vile thoughts pushed to the limit simply for shock value.

What do you think?

Did you know that American Psycho is still sold in shrink wrapped plastic here in Australia?

Just watched an interview of Ellis and the man seems a lot different than I expected him to be.

I' done with one third of the book and he still hasn't killed anybody. Shit sucks.

Anyone read this novel?
I'm having trouble understanding exactly what the satire is, the purpose of all the gory-explicit violence, and the significance of the explanations of music.

I used to think it was merely a criticism on the direction of society/high class society but I'm curious to here other opinions.

What is the most shocking/"wow, I can't beleive they could write this" book for you. I don't mean how can they write this as in its a shitty book, I mean how can they write this and get away with it.

For me, it would have to be American Psycho because of the homeless man and the eye scene. That still has yet to be topped for me.

So /lit/ I've been reading American Psycho for a couple weeks, and eventually I realized that there wasn't much plot left in the book, just a bunch of clothing and restaurant descriptions.

I totally understand why Ellis had to list everything like that, but seriously, didn't his editor tell him to "leave out the boring parts?"
So I skimmed the rest and got to the end.
Did I miss anything?

How would you characterize Patrick Bateman? (besides insane)

What should I expect? My friends tell me there will be points where I am guaranteed to puke. Also Brett Ells general. I loved Rules of Attraction and most of the movies made off of his books have been pretty good.
