What exactly is the literary significance of the recovering addict getting his kicks out of the killing of pets?

What do you people make of the Mother/Death elements and their relation to the IJ film (a woman staring at the audience from the perspective of a baby) ?
A lot from it seems rather forced and i'm not finding much discussion about it online. Some use it as an excuse to call the author a misogynist but that's not where my interests lie.
In fact. I don't even know where to begin but i don't think it holds much conceptusl scrutiny but as an abstract counterpart to the more grounded generational frustrations of the male members (tennis, alcoholism) of the Incadenza family. Making both the male and the female two side of an ever repeating cycle of fear and comfort, dedication and dependency.

Every chapter is like this. Some characters got raped, others killed someone and most of them just had crazy parents. It gets very tiring after a while.
Random bits of information about the plot are also thrown around just before the shocking revelations distract you from them.

How hard is it to actually read?

When does it get good?

I feel like a hypocrite reading this book with the TV on in the background.

I feel like this book is trying to tell me to kill myself. Not in a dramatic or overreaching way but slowly talking to me about it and consider it, not as a solution but as an option.
