More than likely, Luke used Mary herself as a primary source. That's why Luke has so much of the early years of Jesus, as well as the early years of John the Baptist.

The starting point is the Gospel of Luke. It's widely speculated that Luke used Mary herself as one of his primary sources, hence why it contains so many episodes that only Mary could have recounted, like the Annunciation and the Visitation.

It's interesting to note the phrase that Mary "pondered all these things, and kept them in her heart." She seems to have been very philosophical, and prone to reflection. Perhaps she is the mother of theology.

The real fun comes when you dig into the theory that one of Luke's sources was Mary herself. That's why Luke is the only Gospel with the stories of the Annunciaton and the Visitation, and why it's the only Gospel with a story of Jesus as a child. Who could have related those stories if not for Mary? Joseph was long dead.

It's also why Luke's account of the Penitent Thief merits consideration. If Mary was a source of Luke's Gospel, then she, too, was at the foot of the Cross, and could have heard the Good Thief's confession.

Luke is fun because of all the extra details about Mary. Pope Benedict XVI theorizes that Mary herself was probably one of Luke's primary sources.
