Just finished this about 15 minutes ago after reading for around 3 weeks. What an incredible journey, one of the best experiences I've had with a book ever, I dog-eared probably 100+ pages.

I just finished the Brother Karamazov, it was quite an engaging novel. Personally, I believe the book is about the struggles of modern Russia and a question of faith and love of Russia. Alyosha represents the past of the Russian Empire, Mitya represents the present, and Ivan represents the future.

>"If God does not exist, everything is permitted"

As society continues to reject Christian tradition and its incumbent values, thus falling further into nihilism, how do we combat this assertion?

The average NPC is not capable of rationally attempting "the revaluation of all values", yet the societal structure and its ethic seems content to let everyone suffer with depression, nihilism, anxiety, and suicide so long as they continue to pursue their increasingly-unconstrained desires and consume endlessly.

What will happen when people actualize the belief that there is no heaven and no hell; that there is no God watching them?

I don't want to keep reading this. It literally feels like I'm losing years of my life from doing it. It hurts my tummy from how mean everyone are to each other.

What makes the McDuff translation better than the P&V translation? What's so bad about P&V? What's so great about McDuff?

I was thinking about two characters of this book

Aljoša is a schizo
He knew very well who was the murderer
Yes, he has a empathetic temper and has also kinda messianic (Christ's) traits
yet he DEEPLY knows about evil. The only reason he has this character is so attached to suffering people is his egoism.
He isn't immune to the 'Karamazov pulse' (neither is Ivan).
He knew, without a doubt, that it was Smerdjakov.

You can't deny this.
Also it's said that in the second (never written book) Dostoevskij was planning to make him a terrorist

Smerdjakov
"In his childhood he was very fond of hanging cats, and burying them with great ceremony."
[sopiler] destroy my life of my own will and desire, so as to throw no blame on any one.
Holy shit. This character is disgusting, but he is fucking based. Can you recommend me a book where I can find a similar character?
