I wanna read about Arthurian knights and shit, is this actually any good or is it more a pleb fantasy version?

I have read a couple of older texts (Gawain, one of the Mediaeval grail ones I forget the title of) but I wouldn't mind reading something more modern if it's actually good literature in its own right.

I just finished this shortly after reading through the lot of Dune worth reading (and also Heretics and Chapterhouse), and while it was all very nice, it left me wanting a story that was not about the heroes being irrevocably doomed to die miserably in a tragic end they knew was coming because someone in the cast knows the future. I mean, I knew where Arthur was going, obviously, and there's nothing wrong with that type of story, but I kinda feel like a change of pace for something more fun. I've read everything in recommended reading already.

Preferably something finished or by someone who's not going to take two decades to release the next book.

What's your take on adapting classical/medieval legend? How should a writer trying to make a modern adaptation of, say, the Arthurian mythos approach the topic, if he wants to both respect the mythos but also make a modern adaptation worth reading? When does modernization become disrespectful or distasteful?

What does /lit/ think about T. H. White's "The Once and Future King"?

If you liked the steinbeck book and want something similar but complete check this out. Just realize though that these are just based on arthurian legend and not 100% in keeping with them either.

Thoughts on this book? I picked it up in my teens but never got around to finishing it. Should I pick it up again?
