Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg. A celebration of German culture, its social strata, an honest portrayal of its every day life and characters, and a warm hearted satirisation of its flaws. Furthermore it is through this a celebration of all social life and its customs. The 'wahn', madness and superficiality, of society is acknowledged and turned into a productive force, resignation is shown to be a bittersweet necessity, radical elements, on the one hand youthful love and on the other artistic innovation, are successfully integrated into society and in turn society is renewed through this next generation. The poetry is in the knittelvers of Hans Sachs and the burgher dramas of early romanticism. It would be impossible to describe all the beauty and genius of this work. It contains all the mortal beauty of social life. I encourage you to watch this entire scene up until they leave the stage:

Is Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg the best comic play of the 19th century?

Eva claims Walther looks like King David in the picture, Magdalene assumes she means the old King David with harp in hand and long in beard as he's portrayed on the Mastersinger's shield, but Eva replies "No! The one who threw the pebble at Goliath, the sword in belt, the sling at hand, the head is surrounded by light curls, as Master Dürer painted him!"

However Durer never painted this picture, and the mystery of why Wagner mentioned him in such a context has persisted to the present day.
