Best Served Cold, First Law World #4 - Joe Abercrombie (2009)
This was much closer to what I thought First Law would be like rather than how the trilogy went. In terms of media I've experienced, I'd describe it as Assassin's Creed + Ocean's 11 + The Expendables. That may have been a problem for those expecting more of the same. Everyone else in the /sffg/ group who wrote a review about it rated it two stars, though the average rating by the group is much higher. There were a few annoyances that prevented me from rating this 5 stars, mostly in terms of character development. Unlike in The Last Argument of Kings I didn't dislike all the major characters by the end, though that didn't prevent me from quite enjoying that book for other reasons. I enjoyed that there was some character overlap with the previous three books. I don't think there are many series where the author has taken the approach of writing standalone books, or other series for that matter, that feature characters from the main series. I've read a few others that have done similarly. I have considerable experience with shared world franchises, so it's something I'm familiar with and have enjoyed.
Rating: 4/5
