Book of the New Sun is in the distant future. It's not stated clearly but it's at least a billion years into the future when the Sun has begun to exhaust its fuel and turn red.

I'd say get him The Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe. Seriously. Preferably the whole four-part series as two volumes, see picture.

The Book of the New Sun, by Gene Wolfe.

It's much more literary than the average sci-fi work, but if you're used to literary fiction, it shouldn't be an issue.

I was not prepared for this even a little.

Why aren't more books this good?

New to /lit/, does Gene Wolfe have a decent following here? if not, I think I'll just leave because at the moment he's the only thing in the world that matters to me.

What should I expect? Is it worth the read? Should I stop at Urth or read the Long Sun and Short Sun works as well?

Please tell me some of you on here have read The Book of the New Sun (and hopefully its sequel The Urth of the New Sun). I need a discussion thread about this book because of its immense complexity... Would anyone be willing to contribute?

Shame the only place you can get those is second-hand, if you're lucky. The editions they have in print now are pretty lame.
Picture related.

Holy shit that was a mindblowing series. I just finished reading it and I think it was the best science fiction/fantasy book I've ever read. I don't quite know what to think of it, to be honest. I'm still a bit overwhelmed.

I'm not a native English speaker, but I read it in English nonetheless. I had to look up words constantly, but yet it was so effortless. I doubt there are many books with superior prose that I've read in English. It can't possibly get much better than this.

The psychological and emotional depth, character development, the intricacy of the setting. It was a great emotional journey.

Has anybody else read these books? What did you think of it? Is The Urth Of The New Sun a worthy sequel and should I read it?

So /lit/

When it comes to writing novels or stories, do you just go straight at it, with an idea in your head of where you are taking it, or do you have notes that you work from etc .... Myself I have written around 1000 words and plan to write more, that details the history of the world and organisations that are major players in the universe I'm creating. From there I will think of a story or character that may be interesting and build up a story from there...

I ask as I was discussing it with a few friends, and they generally jump straight in and 'capture the creativity' whereas I like to play around with the universe, then pick out a thread I think would be good to write about, and was told I am stifling the creativity.

tldr what method do you use when writing, dive straight, write extensive notes, just the ending etc.

Pic is random

Dr. Talos whispered, "Look about you—don't you recognize this? It is just as he says!"
"What do you mean?" I whispered in return.
"The castle? The monster? The man of learning? I only just thought of it. Surely you know that just as the momentous events of the past cast their shadows down the ages, so now, when the sun is drawing toward the dark, our own shadows race into the past to trouble mankind's dreams."
