Lol this guy is s self indulgent fart sniffing jew who worships essays he wrote in college. His poetry is decent but everything else is him seething that he didn't come up with it first. Thinks everyone is a hack but himself.

Any books that touch on this subject? That is, the effects of capitalism and liberalism on the development of art in the modern age and the mass-production of meaningless drivel?

Except that's not true. Scripture and Tradition don't condemn sexual activity between husband and wife and in fact encourage it (at most, St. Paul makes a tepid argument against it for the practical reason that it would distract one from spiritual matters, but even then he says if you are full of passion, it's better to get a wife (or husband if you are a lady) and at the very least release the tension in a licit manner). The most common allegory for the Church is the Bridegroom of Christ and the Song of Songs is filled with very obvious erotic subtext, not to mention Jesus Christ's presence at the Wedding of Cana is a tacit clue as to why Matrimony is a Sacrament and his support for licit conjugal love between a man and his wife. Also, St. Augustine was notorious for his having lots of illicit sex with women prior to his conversion. Citing him is like citing a former alcoholic about why alcohol is bad 100% of the time. He's very smart, but he's blatantly wrong here.

If you have time, take it. I would say it is better to have a greater understanding than a more extensive library. Note taking and reflection on the content of the book will also vastly improve your memory of it.

>>>/w/hy was Hobbes writing Leviathan?
Hobbes’ writings were a reaction to the English Civil War of 1642, which forced him to flee to France where he begun writing his famous treatise. The War itself was one between King Charles I and the Parliament, which resulted in the tumult with Oliver Cromwell and the third civil war to reinstate the monarchy. After the dust had settled ~200,000 people had died in England and Scotland, and many more in Ireland. During this time there was much looting and pillaging of crown and church lands, and general chaos reigned. At the core of this dispute was a struggle for power between the Parliament and the King—the Parliament thinking that the King was going to destroy the institution of the Parliament, and the King thinking that the Parliament was trying to destroy the institution of the King by curtailing his capacity to govern without their consent. Hobbes wrote a book on his analysis of the wars, called ‘Behemoth, or The Long Parliament’, where he outlines what he considered the major causes of the war (do note that Hobbes was an avowed royalist and had always worked under the aristocracy of England) The most important were:
>The Presbyterian’s desire for religious power
>The Parliament’s desire for sovereign power
>The opinion that England was a Mixed Monarchy
It is from these criticisms that we can see the roots of many of Hobbes arguments. Most important for our topic however, is the focus on the role of the Presbyterians and other religious factions on propagating the war. What Hobbes hoped to achieve with Leviathan was to amend the problems that he saw to be the cause of Civil Strife, based on his appraisal of the war. This meant affirming the absolute power of the sovereign, justifying why the sovereign has power and what the citizen’s obligations are to them, and to subordinate religion to civil powers in the realm of civil affairs. In fact, for this last reason, Hobbes was accused of being an atheist in his time (even though he clearly wasn’t).

I have a fairly good grasp of philosophy and general history, especially of popular government and revolutions. I'm currently working through the classic works of media theory and Barnouw's history of Broadcasting, as well as broader histories of communication technology and propaganda. I'm just fascinated with mass persuasion and propaganda as a subject beyond any particular use. But there are so many intersecting fields that it seems like it'll be decades until i come anywhere close a comprehensive knowledge of the subject.

>no friends that live anywhere near me
>haven't had a relationship in 2 years >live in the middle of nowhere with my father

All I do all day when I'm not working is read or walk

I'm going to moving away at the end of the year to a new job in a city where I will be very busy and have lots of opportunity to meet new people. Until then I'm stuck with this unpleasant sense of isolation.

Books for this feel?
