I've been eyeing this one for years, but I'm afraid I won't like it. My literary preferences are such that most of you would laugh and call me a pleb. Basically I read a lot of mainstream stuff, fluff that doesn't require too much thinking. Probably the most difficult book I've read this year has been The Man in the High Castle.

So with that said, is this something a lowly idiot like myself will find enjoyment in? Is it worth finding out for myself one way or the other?

Finally returning to this. The imagery in this book is phenomenal.

Your favorite piece of classical literature, be it poetry or prose, and why.

Say what you will, my favorite book is East of Eden. I loved the way Steinbeck portrayed Cathy, and the valuable commentary her character provided in respect to sanity and societal identity. I liked her because of how incredulous she seemed toward Adam all through the novel, and then when her actions are brought to light, the realization has a scathing impact on the reader.
It's almost like you can relate to her, despite how psychotic she is. And I really, really enjoyed that sensation.

Yeah, the Centennial Steinbeck books are nice.

Tremendously sad but eventually uplifting. It left me exhausted. It also convinced me that Steinbeck was one of the best writers of the 20th century. I don't quite trust anyone who hasn't read this. I never trust people who read it and wouldn't recommend it to others.

After finishing this, I crawled into bed and didn't move for a few hours. The whole damn book was upsetting. Why did Adam always get the short end of the stick? Did Steinbeck mean for me to be so upset or was the ending supposed to be happy in some way? To me, it made me want to crawl into a hole and stay there.
