Basically, you have two types of posters on /lit/: those who browse /lit/, and those who browse on 4chan. They are distinguished foremost by their interests. The predominant interest of the former is literature, and to them /lit/ is considered a 4chan-flavourd literature forum. The interest of the latter, despite the fact that they post on /lit/, is not literature, but 4chan itself. To them, /lit/ is rather a literature flavoured 4chan board. This may seem like the same thing, but it produces two radically different posting patterns.
For the first, interested in literature, they will post about books or authors, or perhaps some news about the topic. They will stick mainly to /lit/ and perhaps browse one or two other boards, but will do so on the basis of following another interest of theirs: perhaps in science or music or anime. Their culture will be fairly insulated from the rest of 4chan, tending towards more board specific memes.
The second, interested in 4chan, will post literature-themed 4chan content, and will discuss anything under the sun. Because to them, little distinguishes one board from another. They will tend to browse many boards, and hop between them posting basically the same thing. On this board it will be a soijak pointing at a particular form of clothing, on the next a particular exercise, on the next a book or movie. Their use of a board has little to do with their interests. They will only learn board culture for the purposes of more effectively shitposting, but never actually partake in the hobby itself. Culturally, they develop a cross-board character, consisting of imitating and iterating the same general memes from one board to another. A recent example of this was the buckbreaking meme, which flooded every board despite have no relevance to the board topics.
In light of this, it becomes fairly trivial to answer why people bump and post off topic threads: these threads are precisely what they're here for. That is, for them, they are on topic. The joy comes in any stimulation and interaction, so they will post the same type of threads on many boards and repeatedly switch between them, refreshing the page compulsively until they receive a reply. A sorry group, who are everywhere but belong nowhere.
