Personally, I think "blockchains" could be neatly combined with David Graeber's and Karl Polanyi's outlook on money:
-each village had their own local "virtual" currency that was acceptable solely within that local community
-local village market, village vs town trade, town vs port trade - were entirely different spheres of exchange, that did not intersect with each other.
-gold coins was for deals with very foreign strangers (in town-ports) and used primarily to pay off taxes.
