I'm like 90 percent certain all of the pop culture references were either the author trying to show everyone how cool his tastes in media are or the author having a fetish for making his protagonist a perfect little mary sue that likes everything he likes

The Gone World - Tom Sweterlitsch (2018)
It can often be important to have proper expectations when engaging with any work. With this, I did not. I was expecting a novel exploring the uses of "time travel" to solve criminal cases. This is a police procedural murder mystery thriller whose science fiction elements serve as a means to an end to enhance the thrills. By which I mean there's frustratingly little exploration and realization of the potential of the science fiction elements. The protagonist is not particularly competent, but she is very determined. A lot of times the answer to the questions I had seemed to be "because plot", or "so the story could happen". I would advise not thinking about the book deeply or overly much while reading, similar to a lot of popular big budget movies. I believe I would have enjoyed this more if I hadn't. Unfortunately my initial reaction was irrational exuberance imagining all the potential the book could hold based on what I read so far of it, but by the end that would turn to frustration and disappointment. I was unable to appreciate the ending. Am I being uncharitable and unfair? Possibly, but that's how my personal experience went.

Just started pic related. So far so good, it is pretty dark and the characters seem well written. Only on the third chapter but it has me hooked already.

I'm going through a time travel/quantum mechanics phase at the moment.
