All that, absolutely. But also, start at the end. Learn the last line. Then the line before that, etc. Because the poem is a complete unit, so the last line and its conclusion should be somewhere in your thoughts as you start to speak the whole thing in performance, ready to tie up at the end.
practice and build up, saying it out loud, starting from the last line.
