I noticed female fantasy authors are good at a fairy tale type of story. Tanith Lee is another one. This book is like that, but also has political intrigue around the line of succession. I picked this one to read first because it has an interesting setting where the city has a shadow city that coexists with it but is technically in a different place and time at various points. I'll finish this.
