OH NO NO NO NO NO NO

A friend put her up with Poe as the greatest of American writers. I'm new to her, just got her collected works, and at first glance am pretty underwhelmed. Read about 20 of these poems and they seem very simple. They're all, or nearly all, 4 lines long, straight rhyme, untitled, almost simplistic. Kind of shocking, because I knew that if I found them in a drawer I wouldn't think much of them ... therefore I'm a dummy who wouldn't have been able to save one of the greatest poets in the English language. I honestly felt that it read like something off a third tier neo-classicist site. So I obviously have a lot to learn.
Can someone help me appreciate this stuff?

Hearing this teleports me to the early aughts. For a split second I am my younger self and just discovering the world in my babydoll dresses and striped tights. Things were very different. It was a good time to come of age.
