This is essentially Rand's argument. The essential question of morality is 'what is the good, and how does one obtain it?' If the answer is service/the good of others, then you haven't answered at all, and in fact you've abdicated the responsibility of finding anything worthwhile in life. The good has to be created or discovered before it can be redistributed. Rand's analogy for the altruistic way of life is two mirrors facing each other, reflecting nothing and reflected nothingness, ad infinitum. It's not a morality, it's a technique for annihilating values and conviction. So it's at least useful for making people pliable.
