People pray to the saints in the hope they will be heard. The Blessed Virgin Mary is not just a saint, but the greatest of the saints. Greater than all the other saints put together; she was without sin, "full of grace." She was the holy vessel of God, the ark of the new covenant. She did not die, but was assumed into Heaven. She was definitely not "an ordinary human."

No, but they should.

Catholic doctrine says if the deceased was ignorant of the word but of a good nature (that is: lived as if they knew the commandments and as if they believed in Christ's teachings), then these people are saved. Even if they had never heard the word of God, or even heard of it. Also, if a person was not baptized but was of such a character that they would have desired to be baptized if they knew what it was, those also are also saved.
