Its great when everything sort of clicks. Editing this chapter with a simple name/title change I managed to unify the few remaining disparate hanging threads for the ending of the book. Every string is accounted for, every minor little plot dangling chad neatly sorted away. Hope everyone else is getting the words out. And don't get discouraged if something seems a little off on your first draft. You've got a lot of work left to do after that and it'll get fixed then.

Good dialogue with mediocre descriptions is better than the opposite. Lansdcapes are whatever. Readers identify with characters and dialogue first and foremost. As far as descriptions less can be more.

Man, the problem I'm running into now is there are spots where I start editing and then I get an idea to expand the chapter into two. Its good I guess, adds more, but its a lot more work than I was anticipating. But it does get me back in the habit of writing basically everyday, which is invaluable. Anyway, hope everyone is making progress.

Posting serially has all kinds of downsides due to timecrunch, but on the other side of that it really provides an opportunity to dedicate a great deal of time to each chapter. Its weird, its both more stressful and less stressful at the same time. Hope everyone is getting their story out.

Here's something I've been thinking about recently as I've been wrapping this thing up. Characters that exist for a certain period of time, but then they perform their expected task and then they're never seen again. Every book has them. How much closure is even necessary for all those loose ends? Or does that not even matter, and only add to worldbuilding flavor.

The only better feeling than concluding an existing plotline while adding more hooks is later on down the road discovering a plot hole, and then coming up with an elegant unifying solution. It feels much better than the initial draft. Anyway, hope your projects are going well.

Managed to create my favorite "villain" thus far. Righteous, actually righteous not just self righteous, and intelligent. 2nd in command of a military organization. And he ended up killing 3 my characters and sending them to the temple. Drafting is more fun than editing, that's all I can say.
Hope you're all enjoying your writing. Not worth it otherwise.

Hope everyone is making progress. I've got to say, I never fully understood why people said to split up drafting and editing in different chunks. I understood theoretically, but doing this now its a completely different mindset for doing both, I can't really draft on the days I edit. Actual editing, not spot line editing. Its weird. Two completely different frames of mind.

>So is the best bet to just clean it up as best and can and then start querying
were you planning on fobbing off a 90k word novel on poor unsuspecting beta readers without cleaning it up a bit first?
I sort of did that with the book I'm releasing on RR, but I definitely put some time editing beforehand and I've received good feedback both here and based on which chapters people stop at which made me put in a bunch more editing time. As far as free beta reading royal road has actually been great because of the metrics it gives. Granted, I'm not interested in trying to get it normally published because its a bit out there and would never in a million years be accepted. So doing something like that may not be an option for you, but if you can, you can get reasonable feedback.

I've got to say people on that site are finicky. Chapter 17 I made it crystal clear the MC was interested in men, not women, which is critical information for the reader to know in order to make sure that her upcoming friendships aren't tainted. As a result I lost a follower, whatever shit happens, and got an instant 0.5 star review from that person, but then I gained 3 other followers. I'm not really going to worry about my star review anymore, seems like a waste of time, and just try and accumulate followers. People seem to be reading, at least.
Hope everyone's being productive with their writing.

regarding your point I don't necessarily disagree. maybe hack apart chapter 1 and graft it a bit onto chapter 2. The thing is, though, based on the statistics I have from the site, I lose relatively more people from chapter 2 to chapter 3 than chapter 1 to chapter 2. I figure its because I make it abundantly clear the MC is not exactly a very nice person in chapter 2 and people don't want to continue from there - or they were giving it two chapters and its not their particular cup of tea.
But you're not wrong, I deliberately chose to play a trick on the reader for the first bit of the story, albeit with big glaring hints dropped here and there.
