Let's try this again.

Just finished pic related, and I really need to recc it hard to everybody. This is exactly how historical "fiction" should be written.

I've never been to Yorkshire (or Jórvíkshire, as one of book's character insists on calling it) nor seen an English moor, but the author managed to conjure the ghost of its wild past for me to behold as clearly as I can see the Alps from my bedroom window every morning.

The tale of the Cragg Vale Coiners is a brutal and crude hymn to freedom sung and lived by violent, ignorant and willful men; there's no romantic idealism here, but instead the heroic struggle of individuals banding together to conquer the right to live their lives as they see fit by knife and forgery and a sort of stubborn faith in freedom as something that is natural to every living thing.

Yes, it is overwritten and overly verbose in places, but this is still one of the great books of the last few years. Do yourselves a favour and read it.

Clip a coin and fuck the crown.

Any of you read this? I've started it this evening and I'm having a blast as of now.

The prose is a bit overwrought in places, kind of gives you a creeping feeling of the author trying a bit too hard at the whole pseudo-aedic, epic repetition style he aims at but eh, I personally enjoy this kind of style - especially when it is applied to this kind of folkish, violent, crude and beautiful tales and landscapes.

Wish more people would pick it up.
