i said this before, but pick related is an amazing book on the sociology, religion and cultural development, as well as basic history of the japanese people. Hearn has a great grasp of language and no other work has explained the japanese mind and culture so clearly and evocatively. wrigen pre wwi as well so it has that great positive feel to it without the cynicism of the 21st century.

amazing read, delves into the core of the mindset. and is fare, has hreat respect for it but doesnt pull back from critiquing, still comes out as generous. i actually found it oddly similar to a lot of trends in medieval europe. the two are actually weirdly similar.

as a related note, if anyones familiar, i would like a similar book that explains a lot of the pathos and sociology of medieval europe. i dont know if one of the mentioned books about the crusades would be particularly good.
