We believe in free speech and allowing demonstration, even obnoxious ones. Gays can hold a parade, and so can Klan members and Nazis. The U.S. is a free country and no one can stop peaceful demonstrations as long as they stay lawful. Russia has an even worse reputation for restricting liberties than ours, and you've been conditioned to think that's okay. Russia isn't so much anti-gay as they are anti-freedom.

That being said, I really wouldn't want to be walking down the street with my ten year old kid on the day of a pride parade and see some blade shaking his assless chaps around.
