/lit/'s opinion on a Song of Fire and Ice?

I for one think it's pretty terrible, though slightly better than most pleb quality fantasy.

I've noticed here and there that most of /lit/ does not like this series, i just picked up the first book and im enjoying it

I've been thinking about picking up A Game of Thrones, the first in the series "A song of Ice and Fire".

Should I do it? Is it that good?

I'm afraid the author will die before releasing the sixth and final book, and I'll get depressed and shoot myself.

The author, George R.R. Martin is 63 at the moment. He was born in 1948, and who knows, maybe he'll drop dead tomorrow, the old bastard is quite fat.

The truth be told I need to Lurk Moar, as I'm sure this is a frequent topic on /lit/, but are these good?? I'd like an opinion on the books themselves without getting to deep into the show.

do i miss out on anything vital by skipping a game of thrones, having only watched the tv show and begin reading a clash of kings?

i figured it would skip a lot but 12 hours per book is a pretty long time even of HBO time
