This is also actually a great book. And he didn't even need to describe everything all stupid in every single sentence.

Tool was certainly talented, and it is a work of merit when it comes to the time and era it is set in, but it really isn't that funny. It read in parts like an desperate attempt at trying to capture the wit and comedic sensibilities of a Billy Wilder film, and I can't escape thinking that an earlier or later draft lost to us might have been a better read. Also, that "modern day 4chaner" deceleration is such horseshit. I've known but one person in my life that comes close to matching Ignatius girth, mannerisms and temperament, and he has "better things" to do than argue his tracts online.

What makes this book so special in your opinion?

Its humour is so unique and has an innocence to it, as though there is real sense that the author is desperately trying to make the reader laugh as is the case with many mediocre comedic novels (which often rely on a steady stream of one-liners, etc).

I am tempted to suspect that JK Toole's own inevitable mental decline and collapse has something to do with it, as well as his erudition and wide frame of reference in that respect. There is something so personal about the novel, but at the same time it is so cleverly plotted and organised such that it is more than simply a humorous portrayal of an eccentric character.

It does get stale, really could have used an editor, but still, laughed out loud. It is basically a novel length greentext story.
