>implying a generic fantasy (a genre most people leave behind as they exit their early teens) that aims way too far in terms of narrative complexity, than its author's skills merit, inevitably trainwrecks its own needlessly convoluted world mechanics, and goes on and on for book after book ad nauseam, doesn't fit the bill of 'pretentious bullshit' way better than anything that could be considered 'good works'.

"Her antiquity in preceding and surviving succeeding tellurian generations: her nocturnal predominance: her satellitic dependence: her luminary reflection: her constancy under all her phases, rising and setting by her appointed times, waxing and waning: the forced invariability of her aspect: her indeterminate response to inaffirmative interrogation: her potency over effluent and refluent waters: her power to enamour, to mortify, to invest with beauty, to render insane, to incite to and aid delinquency: the tranquil inscrutability of her visage: the terribility of her isolated dominant resplendent propinquity: her omens of tempest and of calm: the stimulation of her light, her motion and her presence: the admonition of her craters, her arid seas, her silence: her splendour, when visible: her attraction, when invisible.”

So /lit/, I'm new here, in all honesty, so if this accidentally seems like a troll, then it's just that: accidental.

My English teacher wants us to do a paper on an author of nineteenth century "classics", and suggests we use the author whose book we read in a recent project (I read A Portrait by James Joyce), and that we need at least two books by said author.

So, the question to you, /lit/, is do I go for Joyce, or do I stick with Joyce (realize that I'm young), or do I pick somebody else? If so, who? I was thinking Ford Madox Ford, myself, but post who you think, and why.

He tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end he wasn't as good as Proust

Hey /lit/, greetings from a /mu/tant.
I didn't really have a chance to check out this board so i wondered if I might give it a try now :)

Concerning my person:
I would consider myself an average reader (about 2 books a month) but i am also the type that likes to read the authors diaries, letters and essays and I usually read a bunch of those too.

I generally don't like translated books so I'm always trying to read them in the original language..

English is not my mother tongue but I am especially interested in classic english literature so I usually resort to english Books.
My favorite authors are Orwell, Edward Lear, H.G. Wells and i have been obsessed with Lewis Carrol for a long time now.

My Question:
I'm about to start reading Ulysses by James Joyce, and I'm wondering if i should read Odyssey first. I know the story of Odyssey quite well but haven't read it yet.

..and my second Question:
Do you think i should give Finnegans Wake a try? Though I am a non-native english speaker, i would say my comprehension for the classical english language is quite good, i didn't have problems with the other authors, and i even spent a year in Ireland some time ago, if that helps.

Greetings,
Fritter-my-wig

Did everyone from /b/ just decide that they'd move over here? I'm seeing a whole lot of stupidity. I thought this was a place people talk about, well, literature.
