/lit/ - Literature

I think it may be the result of slacking when I took AP English in high school, but I have an extremely difficult time discerning emotion and keeping track of events of chapters while reading The Brothers Karamazov. I usually read a chapter followed by listening to commentary on the chapter, during which I am almost consistently surprised by the insights of the commentators into the book, it's themes, and especially as they shed light on the emotions behind dialogue.

Is this to be expected or am I retarded? Should I need to rely on commentary to understand what is going on? I did the same for Inferno but I don't know if this is something that I will grow out of with practice or if that's just part of the joy of the reading
