When the Ancient Mariner realizes how beautiful the water-snakes are as they writhe in the oily sea, and the curse starts to break down.

Read stuff you enjoy. I'd recommend starting with fun classics like Kipling, Keats, Frost, Manley Hopkins, Dorothy Parker, or Robert Service who is a particular favorite of mine.
Then upgrade to heavy-hitting easy-readers like Donne and Auden, Browning, Oliver.

Don't dip your dick into modern poetry until you've established a base with the traditional stuff.

I memorized the Rime of the Ancient Mariner over the course of about 8 years, and now it makes me cry every time I recite it in my head. When you know a piece of literature that well, it becomes a thread of emotion just as it was in the writer's head. The scene at the end when the old sailor is leaning over the ship's railing and crying, I cry with him
Also the scene in Le Pain Nu where he's sitting on the smuggler's veranda with the girl with the shaved head, they kiss with their mouths full of wine and talk about running away, knowing they won't really do it. Dunno why it chokes me up.

I draw that conclusion based on the laughable stuff posted in OC threads. I don't expect to find a second TS Eliot here but it's clear nobody who posts original poetry here has ever read a decent poem.

I think it's no coincidence that the illustrations stop with WWII and the death of realist art. Can't go filling books with abstract expressionism.
But I agree it's a damn shame.
