Let's rap about how the medium is the message in relation to 4chan.

I believe that the internet--and 4chan in particular--is being used as a very meek crowbar to wrench our minds away from this passive, lazy role of a spectator waiting for razzle dazzle, toward something more like engaging with the world, interacting with people, and sharing ideas.

However, 4chan, being an image board, lends itself almost too much to a fading and rapidly outdated TV culture--you can see it in the .gifs we all collect and share and likewise with screengrabs of TV and film. Not to mention the youtube links. I'd assert that it is this aspect of 4chan that makes it seem okay to do things like merely posting the word "faggot"--because the medium is still too much like a TV medium where almost nothing is expected of its audience.
