If one were being controlled by Mario, this would imply that the movement of the joysticks and thus, one's thumbs, would be under the control of Mario. Since one's thumbs are in one's own control, Mario does not control one. Also, if Mario controlled one, then one would spin as Mario does after running over a banana, getting tangled in wires, and causing lawsuits.
