There is nothing else to it, right? The whole point of life is to make your neurons fire as intensively as possible before death arrives? Are there any philosopher who offer consolation?

>I read the other day about Joseph Brodsky teaching a class at a leading American college and coming to a reference to Ovid. He asked who was familiar with the reference. No one. A suspicion sneaked into him: Who had heard of Ovid? No one. (A town in upstate New York, isn't it?) He stood stunned, looking at this group of highly intelligent young people, and could say only "You've been cheated".

What do we do about the absolute state of American "education"?
