I am convinced dostoevsky was sent to prison because of how bad this book is

wtf? were there really two of him?

Just finished this and I got some questions

1. Did his double actually exist?
2.Why was everyone so compassionate towards him in the end?
3.Who was the German doctor that took him away in the end?
4.What about all the letters he got from his double and Klara, were they real?

Just started reading Bird's translation of The Double.

Can someone explain to me the significance of Dostos little rant at the beginning of chapter 4? Is it just shitting on the sentimental literature of his time or a general literature of simple platitudes without any redeeming artistic qualities? It just seemed a bit forced and bitter as if to parallel himself with the main character.

I just finished The Double and damn it! What a great book! The only thing I didn't get is why everybody in Olsufi's place were waiting for Mr. Goliadkin with the Doctor, just as if they knew he was going to the house and then resolved to create a trap to the madman. I mean, evidentially the letter from Klara was written or even imagined by Goliadkin, nobody could know he was going there. Even if they suddenly decided to call someone because a crazy man was waiting for nothing in front of Olsufi's mansion why did they call a doctor to catch the maniac and not the fucking russian police?

What does /lit/ think of The Double?
I keep seeing threads about every other book from Dostoevsky but pic related.
What book of his should I move onto next?
