Anyone who likes reading sci-fi for adventure and advanced technologies, don't read starmaker.
Starmaker is the scifi equivalent of Buried Giant. It's a book filled with the human condition and the philosophical implications those apply. The prose is great, and it's well constructed, but nothing happens. They just visit other planets and philosophize what it means to be human and how the world wars shook the author so much that he wrote this novel.

If you are a philosophag, then this is for you.
If you like books like roadside picnic, botns, then don't bother reading, this isn't for you.
If you liked Solaris, then this book is for you.

Where is the starmaker shill? This book touches so well on our current racial and economic turmoil. I don't believe it was written so long ago.
how Klapistan's current president is blaming everything on immigrants, and not on the 1%. How they are using double think and newspeak to make the idiots of their society to go along with them.
Long ass introduction, foreword and poetic shiity first chapter aside this is turning out to be a great read.
