Which books should I read to develop better manners (without becoming a phony)?

I literally haven't read a single book in the past 10 years because I'm afraid I'll read it badly, won't be able to make useful notes, etc.

Why are some writers so good at titles while others absolutely suck at them? Doesn't this also count as good writing?

Does this happen to anyone else? Post words that you’ve had similar realizations about. I am a native english speaker (american) btw, so I think I probably learned the meanings of "co" (as a prefix) "operate" and "cooperate" when I was very young, and I just didn’t notice the connection at the time.
