The anti-genre fiction meme has been around for some time but I think aside from rustling a few jimmies and getting a smile as a whole the meme hurts the readership which might be turned off to anything confined to a genre.

My favorite novels are elevated genre novels. They're novels which get so much more out of being a genre, that use the genre to tell us something about being human and to ask really important questions. Sci-fi is so easy to build for that because you create something different, create something new, and you say "how would we react to that as humans?" or you just drop it in the middle and let humans be humans around it. I think with that you can reveal so much about the weirdness of being alive and of having a mind and having desires and all the rest of this by adding something new to the mix.

I really enjoy Heinlein's books. Almost everything I've had the chance to read has been decent to amazing.

For one shot scifi you should look up The Windup Girl or The Forever War.

I don't know how many millions of times this was discussed here, but: is Heinlein a sexist pig? I can't make up my mind.

just finished this.

No wonder fucking hippies cum all over this book.

It was pretty good though, and Jubal Harshaw is the best character ever.

Stranger in a Strange Land.

3/4ths the way through.

Started pretty good, but turned to shit faster than a Taco Bell Burrito.
