Haven't read God Emperor yet, buy Children I thought was rather disappointing. I also think it's rather telling that all the best scenes in Children are the ones with Paul/The Preacher. I think Herbert wanted to create a character who could surpass Paul by having the courage to do something even he wouldn't, but fails since Paul has a kinder heart. and is more emotional/relatable than Leto. Also, I don't think he realized how based he made Paul in children:
>Survives his apparent demise at the end of the last book
>Calls out everyone including his sister for not understanding his message as a Messiah.
>Knew about the Golden Path, but refused to take it because he believed he could find a future unseen that would be less cruel to humanity
Paul is an anime protagonist trapped in a series that refuses to let him be one, which is rather disappointing given how much power scaling Herbert indulges in. I'll definitely read God Emperor to see if it lives up to the hype, but so far I'm inclined to think Dune peaked with the first book, with Messiah being a passable epilogue.
