How does one absorb style, /lit/?

Say there's an author whose style of writing I greatly admire and want to emulate, or at least incorporate into my own style. How do I go about doing that? Is reading all their works enough, or should I keep a journal noting down all the quirks and eccentricities I notice? I've heard Hunter S. Thompson typed the entirety of The Great Gatsby over and over to better grasp Fitzgerald's style. Would such an exercise actually work?

Now that I think of it, I'm kind of surprised that I don't read more on /lit/ about the users on here trying to live life to the extreme, or at least searching for new experiences.

Are you all going to end up writing novels that were inspired by living the NEET/liberal arts education/menial job life, or are you all doing interesting stuff (ok it's 4chan but I'll give you all a chance).

What does /lit/ think about gonzo journalism?

Mr Literature could you recommend me an author that is colourful. The term 'nonfictionish' comes to mind. Focus on writing and aesthetic more than plot. A writer similar to Hunter S Thompson and Jack Kerouac, if you will. If you have read Anthony Kiedis's autobiography or 'Here comes Everybody' that is sortoff what I am looking for.

Hi /lit/, i want to get into the beat generation literature. I've read some books that are associated with beat, like a clockwork orange and fear and loathing in las vegas, also some stuff from Huxley. I am currently reading On the Road by Jack Kerouac, and im "kinda" liking it. I mean, i like the book, sure, its a nice book, but i cant seem to enjoy it like i enjoyed fear and loathing in las vegas. Which book should i buy next, One flew over the cuckoos nest or naked lunch? BTW i know a little about the plot of naked lunch, but not a whole lot, i dont want to spoil it. I have seen the Cuckoos Nest movie.

Hey, /lit/. I was wondering what you make of Hunter S. Thompson's political views. I've heard him described as everything from a libertarian to being on the far-left. He's a guy who cited Ayn Rand as an influence and was a huge gun enthusiast, but also supported Jimmy Carter on the strength of a speech Carter gave on the need to help workers, and admired Che Guevara. He's been the inspiration for characters like conspiracy theorist Dale Gribble on King of the Hill (who seems more right wing, given his anti-government stance) to Spider Jerusalem of Transmetropolitan (who appears to be somewhat left-wing, given his emphasis on social responsibility and the need to help The City's poorest people). I've decided to post this on /lit/ rather than /pol/ because I'm hoping /lit/ will have less of a tendency for partisan individuals to claim that the guy supports all their own views.
