Well we're already halfway there on Emma. I've seen a shoujo manga version of that before at a local comic book chain.

There was also an anime adaptation of Alice in Wonderland in the 80s called Fushigi no Kuni no Alice. Adapting classic western literature into anime was huge in Japan in the 70s and 80s.

Also to answer OP's question, The Witches of Karres. It's even Miyazkki approved, he drew the cover for the Japanese translation!
