Main reason is probably because those writers like Vance, Wolfe, Robert Howard- read the classics. While contemporary writers probably haven't even read those that have read the classics. It shows in their amateur prose and concepts.
I know this gets thrown around a lot but we do live in Idiocracy. We see it not only in literature but in every facet of art. I'm sure you have seen the many threads discussing the low standards in modern writing.

From /tv/'s obsession with capeshit, to /v/ and interactive movie gaymes. I won't even mention music and actual paintings. It's too grim. It's okay to be pretentious, and you'll feel better about yourself if you put down the slope. And maybe one day be can make sffg great again.
