Most humans wont cooperate for free unless there's a profit motive in something.
And most activities can't reward with inmaterial goods like status or power, so you need to use money as profit motive of those activities.

You can't use social status or social power as profit motive of cleaning trash and cleaning the sewers.

However comparing every modern musical piece to beethoven and bach, would be like comparing all modern literature to shakespeare.

Not all artists would be as compelled to reach the level of bach.
This doesn't mean that if a modern day kid wanted, he couldn't become another modern day bach.

The terra theme from FFVI is a really beautiful piece, that follows clasical structures.

I'm reading the silmarillion and while is a good book and shit, the story seems slow (I'm on the 230 page) and nothing really seem to happen beyond some lucifer type of guy who does evil things and really nothing happens beyond some short stories.
