Depends on the book and the differences between the editions. Yes, I think it is definitely worth it to be picky. Several minutes doing a bit of a Google search or, at most, reading some articles/forum threads about translations < the entire time you'll spend reading the book, plucking through it, revisiting it etc.
Generally, I will prefer Oxford over Penguin, with some exceptions. The only novels I tend to buy from Wordsworth and shit are English language novels where the text doesn't change too much. Avoid Barnes and Noble completely, if you can.

Cambridge, Routledge, Everyman Library and New York Review of Books are generally of very good quality too.

How does /lit/ generally find Vintage? They seem pretty standard status quo and reliable for nice paperbacks. Of course this is also a point against them since they'll without exception have the popular meme of the week translation, like all the Dostoevsky P&V shit. They're commercial, not academic. Essentially slightly nicer looking Penguin classics imo (which they are a subsidiary of).
Also I got a second hand Vintage edition of Hunger published in the 70s or whatever and I only found out afterward that the Robert Bly translation is meant to be really bad. Oh well.
