Are the Lord of the Rings books worth reading, or are they basically Harry Potter tier? I see The Silmarillion recommended a lot, but I've never read any of J.R.R. Tolkien's work, and I'm wondering if I should bother with the more famous books first.

Why was Gandalf acting like he had amnesia when he encountered Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas in Fangorn at Treebeard's crib? Or is his backstory since falling off the bridge in Moria elucidated at some point, thus you can ignore my first question?

>Gimli calls out "Gandalf!"
>Gandalf says, "Gandalf. Yes, that was the name. I was Gandalf."

i love this book.
There is love but no sex, only that kind of love that was born in the medieval age, with the chivaric romance without soiling it whit human passions and cheating. It has heroes but they haven't that finest phsicological profile, they are archetype. I love the knowledge that talkien has of the human being and you know while reading that you are reading the encyclopedia of the human race.
please, share your knowledge about this book, i will be more than happy to discover some kind of stuff that was hidden to my eyes
i am currently reading it for the 3d time in 7 years

Why didn't Frodo just fly the ring to Mordor on the backs of the eagles that ended up flying him out of Morder later on anyway? This seems like a gaping plot hole.

>"Solomon commissions bowls from which 10000 people can eat..."
>"An amazing power!"
>"He possesses a his ring [sic]... When he puts his ring on, Allah opens to him the gate of all miracles."
>"Now if you think about it, science-fiction movies such as the Lord of the Rings... are all works aimed at reading the life of the Prophet Solomon."

What are some other Western literary classics that are said to be based on European myths and folklore, but have actually been inspired by the lives of Abrahamic prophets?

I suppose this might be the most pleb kind of thread here, but I want to read the LOTR books and The Hobbit. I've never read them before and I've only seen one of the movies a decade ago.

Which edition should I buy?

I'm looking around and there's so many versions. Some have extra drawings or notes or revisions or other bullshit. I just want the best one. If there's a more "complete" one, then I might as well do it right and read that one.

I have heard people here say that the main issue with The Lord of the Rings, is that Tolkien very clearly had pacing issues, and I was wondering why anyone thinks that is?

Personally I think it might have something to do with his decision to, once the fellowship breaks at the end of the first book, tell each story completely separately until the end, rather than adopting an approach in which each story is told simultaneously chapter by chapter.

However in this case, do you think that the story would lose any of its punch?

For instance, when the Riders of Rohan arrive at Pellenor, we find this out at the end of Pippin's story, when the horn of Rohan blows across the field, before immediately going back a couple weeks to Aragorn's story with the Rohirrim, thus retelling what happened during the same time.

Or when we are at the Black Gate if the story was told simultaneously, we would know that Frodo and Sam are crossing the plains of Mordor and that Frodo is most definitely still alive and well, whereas in its current state, Frodo and Sam's story is left with the ambiguity of Frodo's death and Sam's journey on alone to the Crack of Doom.

tl;dr. Would the books have been easier to read, or would they have lost their impact if the story didn't constantly jump 2 weeks backwards every time the character perspective changed?
