This is a tale of the backcountry of the Australian north - and the hinterland of the interior. The setting, the types of people and the way of life are authentically drawn with the crisp ember edges of nostalgia.

'The Man from Down Under' is a novel strong in aura. The appeal of the farmhand life, the golden desert plains and the magic they weave around those who work and live there.

This great emptiness is people with shepherds and shearing gangs, with impressionable young girls and rough drifters -- and, of course, dogs, deer, rabbits, dingos, wallabies, goannas, sheep, cattle, and the mystery shape of the rumoured tiger, who leaves footprints and dead stock in the night, but is never seen. And all those laughing birds and cicardas, dappling the eucalyptus high and mighty under another ripper of a summer, and all tongues are parched with the thick stench of buegs and beers by nightfall.

There is romance, humour and tragedy as the characters, strongly portrayed, live out one unforgettable shearing season.

>The Isolation Routine
Several generations into the future, after an unspecified global incident there is a condition set that twice yearly, for a period of two months all citizens must barricade their homes, stock supplies and live without once exiting their properties. There are no public amenities in these periods and the law applies to all. Although some people are sceptical about the nature of the law others contend that during the sealed up periods they hear terrible cries from outside and sounds of battle.
Every isolation season comes with reports of households found dead during the period, having seemingly broken down into violence.

The narrative follows a mans efforts to find out the secret behind the law and the barriers he consistently comes up against over the course of a year (two isolation 'routines') and how, combined with the endurance test of the isolation, it drives him quite mad. Placed in the tradition of Kafka, although clearly belonging specifically to the horror/thriller genre in the age of 9/11 conspiracy theorists.
